The beginnings of the studio glass movement are often traced to the United States in the early 1960s, but the interest in glass as an artistic medium is clearly an international phenomenon. The Hoffman Gallery of Studio Glass highlights objects of dazzling variety and techniques by pioneering artists in the field as well as prominent artists working in glass today from North America, England, Australia, Scandinavia, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Japan. The emergence of glass as an autonomous art form, rather than a utilitarian medium, is amply evident in the modern interpretations of familiar vessels and both figurative and abstract sculptural pieces.
